Retro Typographics

Even though I’m an illustrator rather than a typographer by trade, I often take the opportunity to explore type in my various art practices.
Using my previous experience as a small props designer, I created both this typeface font and physical sheet as a tribute to the glory days of Letraset rub-down lettering.
Using one of my battered old original Letraset sheets, from way back, as reference, I was able to take accurate measurements to use as a guide layout.
I then painstakingly recreated it in Adobe Illustrator as a digital asset.
Since I’d originally built all the main characters (A-Z) for my Arc Technic typeface to a grid, it was relatively easy to extrapolate the numbers and special characters from it.
The restrictions of working within such as basic grid threw up a few challenges, and as a result some characters were more successful than others.
But as the first complete typeface I designed from scratch, I taught myself a great deal and genuinely enjoyed the process.

I think the final effect looks quite convincing as a genuine sheet of 1980s rub down lettering and would look right at home on a period film set.
